Loudspeaker manufacturer Magico has just released a range of equipment feet that are not recommended for use under its own loudspeakers!
Instead, Magico suggests that its new ‘QPods’ could improve the sound of other manufacturers’ loudspeakers. However, QPods are actually intended to maximise the performance of front-end hi-fi components, according to Irv Gross, of Magico. ‘Originally developed for internal R&D, the Magico QPods are being introduced to maximize front-end system performance,’ he told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. ‘By employing a combination of extensional damping, constrained-layer damping, and vibrational isolation, the overall system Q factor was brought to ideal levels and, thus, the model and name were created. Of course, in so doing, controlling the transmission of resonances to all equipment in the testing and listening facilities became the next variable to isolate.’
The pods are CNC-turned and milled from hardened stainless-steel, oxygen-free copper, and hard black anodized aircraft-grade aluminium. These materials are used to create the constraining layers for the damping material which is alternately clamped between them to create a single traverse dissipating unit. Magico says that vibrational wave propagation through the floor, stands, and the equipment itself is converted into heat energy through shear deformation (side-to-side movement in each layer of the pod). ‘By adding a multi-levelled constraining layer mechanism to equipment standoffs, electrical and mechanical vibration-induced artefacts are acutely reduced, ultimately resulting in marked improvements to signal fidelity,’ said Gross. However Gross does not recommend using the QPods with Magico speakers. ‘The QPods are not designed to replace or augment the Magico Q loudspeaker feet,’ he said. ‘They may, however, be effective in decoupling other loudspeakers.’ Magico QPods will be available in sets of three pods or sets of four pods.
